Aku Shaper Fish Template

#1 Back to Top

hey people!

I decided to make a fish by myself. it's the first time that i will shape a surfboard.

I downloaded the program Aku Shaper, but I´m not realy good in it. The shapes I tried were horrible.

The fish I want to make is arround 6´4" to 6`6" x 22" x 2 7/8".

Can any one give me some help to get me a good fish template?

Sorry about my english

Mahalo from Germany

Marcel,

I would be happy to send you my fish templates.  Not over the Internet.  It would have to be by Clipper Ship around the Horn. PM me an address if you are interested.  Mike

Here's one of mine (not used to this attachment stuff so it might not work)

It used to be the actual aku board file could be attached but I don't think it's doable now.

Keep practicing with aku and you'll get better, and did you know you can copy from  photos with the program ?

There's another fish thred from a few weeks back whre I posted a pic of a board I used as inspiration.

Hello!

I was just wondering you could tell me how you enter the measurments for a board into AKU? I am building a hollow board and have all of the measurements but can not for the life of me figure out how to enter them into the fields available.  After a while, I just loaded a "generic" board and tried to adjust the shape as best as I could, but could still not adjust the length...  I must be missing something here! I am using "HollowBoard Template Maker" to get the spine and ribs, but when I open up the AKU file in Hollowboard template maker, it only gives me three ribs.  Any advice would be fantastic!  Awesome posts by the way.

Kindly,

Erik

Thank´s for your tips and the PDF. It is realy a nice shape.

My main problems are the rails and the bottom. I´m not realy sure where the single concave have to start and where it will pass into the double concave. How deep the concave have to be is also a thing I did´nt know.

It will be my first board, so I´m doubtful if I do everything right. The fish will be a hollow wood board. I have all programs I need to generate all spine and ribs template. I also have the wood planks, grown & produced in Germany (it should be an ecologically worthwhile board).

Leave the bottom flat - Start your vee 20" up from the tail and bring it back to the tips of the tail. No more than a 1/4".

You dont need the concave for a fish like you do on a shortboard thruster.

Personally I wouldn't bother too much with designing the rails or the bottom on AKU unless you're getting it machined. Just design the rocker and plan shape then shape the rails/bottom on the actual blank.

Good luck and enjoy!

Hey Mayako

Sorry, missed that this was going to be a hollow wooden board. Ignore what I said before. Is it Jed ail's hollow template maker programme you're going to use then? I'm not that familiar with it, but know everyone over at treetosea.org raves about it. It may be worth asking over there if you haven't already.

Hey Mayako,

Jedail's Hollow board program is the best bet for creating ribs, and center rib, it also will draw the rail template if you specify solid rails. I've used it on the boards and it is great. Get it here: www.grainsurf.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=386.

Also, I believe you will find quite a bit of help building Hollows at the Tree To Sea Site. Check out Boco's stuff.

Good luck.

It doesn't work? Bummer it was a good ideal. Does it work with Shape 3D?

Erik

the hollow board template maker will give you ribs wherever you place slices. So you got 3 ribs because aku defaults to using 3 slices to define the board. I think that Aku lofts between the slices--but if you add a new slice to a designed board, it just keeps the dimensions of the design. So you are best off planning the board with the minimum number of slices (keeps all the curves smooth and prevents you from making inconsistent rail profiles), and then when all the design work is finished, add new slices where you want ribs.

Adjusting the length is up in one of the menus...can't recall which one, and don't have aku on this computer. Good luck!

For what it's worth, a hollow fish is much more challenging than board without any special features and will require substantially more futzing on your part to get everything fit up right (the plans won't print that great--it is a guess and check sort of process).

Mike,

Thanks for the advice. I felt like a boob once I read your response. It just goes to show that patience goes a long way! I added the ribs as you instructed and the template came out great. Thanks for the response and I am sorry that it has taken so long to get back to you. As well, I took your advice and started with a straight-forward board instead of a fish. Like you said, I have enough to to get through with a normal board this time around without having to deal with all of the bells and whistles that go into building a fish. Thanks again! I'll shoot some pictures your way once I finish this board.  I'm about 1/3 of the way done now.

Kindly,

Erik
