Hawaii, mentawais, Australia, Bali, East sumbawa, Tahiti

Guys, I'm travelling to Hawaii, mentawais, Australia, Bali, East sumbawa, Tahiti (its a 5 month trip next year). I know airline costs for boards are getting so expensive so Im not sure how many boards i should take.

How many should I take out of my quiver

5'10 mikey mayer fish shaped in SA

6'2 al merrick K board (diamond tail)

6'2 step up board (Shaped by me)

7'0 semi gun (with plywood glass on fins and resin tint shaped by me)

6'4 clayton squash tail

Retro 5'10 21 1/2"  2 1/2" diamond tail single fin shaped by me

Thanks everyone, Jonny

What, yer trustfund running so low you gotta worry bout board fees?

You're probably best off with 3 or 4 boards and buying more as you break them. Were you thinking of bringing 8 boards? You'll be paying through the nose to haul that load around plus its a big pain.

Out of the US Fly Singapore. 3 boards free ( one boardbag) as one of your two bag allowance. You can usually squeeze 4 with Singapore though. If your boardbag looks like its stuffed with 6 boards Bali customs will try to squeeze you for $20 or so. Expect to pay a few bucks on inter island stuff too- Bima/Kupang. Merpati and the rest finally got wise.

On the other legs I think Quantas is still free but let the Aussie's chime in on that one. Otherwise there are plenty of boards to buy there. South Pacific can be rough if you get stuck on Continental which has so many of the flights there. On their schplog site, the Hobgoods mentioned that they are sending their boards at cheaper rates as "cargo" now.

Oh yeah, did I mention that you suck and we're all jealous. Just kidding. Enjoy and send pictures!

Thanks a lot buddy. Great reply - it really helps. Yeah Im running pretty low on cash, and its mostly because of accommodation. I am probably going to stay in a tent  in a lot of places because its quite a long trip!. tahiti is bloody expensive too. Im sure by the time i get to tahiti, all my boards will be broken anyways - and il buy a 6'9 with a lot or fucker for the really bowly big waves over there. Anyone been out there?

Thanks again Jonny

the best advice I ever got, prior to my first trip to the North Shore, was to get my board 2 or 3 months before the trip, and ride it in everything.    That way you KNOW the board inside out.    No surprises.     Me, I'd take one board.  If you have a fear of breakage, take a backup board too.  It's different for everyone.    If not making a board for the trip, go with the  one or two boards you are most comfortable with.

Bill, thanks for the reply. it was really helpful.

Do you think that i should just take a semi gun, because i will definately need it on the north shore, and a step up board? or a semi gun and the fish? I surf my fish up to about head and a half at most. Its quite difficult as im surfing so many different types of wave and sizes. where do you shape? Would you be able to take a look at my boards and give me some advice?

hey jonny

I would take a 2 board boardbag with the semi gun and the clayton squash tail performer.

anything up to 10 foot, well, do you surf bigger really? i guess i dont even go over 8 foot hawaiian...?

and you can always buy a board somewhere if you break one. replacing a minigun or a hp shortboard is rather easy.

or you want to go groovy and replace the clayton with a funky riding board, al merrick k diamond -that is the small wave board if my memory serves me right

or maybe even super funky and take fish, fish are short, and great for late take offs, in my opinion, oh wait, my fish is not really a fish but a 5.9*21.75 quad fish little rippr.

have fun on prepping the trip mate!!

Thanks mate, I think I might take the Semi gun, The fish (I LOVE IT SO MUCH) and either the merrick K diamond tail or the step up board ive shaped. the problem with my beloved merrick is that it is slightly delaminated + and has been repaired a few times, and it is more likely to break than my step up board which i have just shaped! the step up board will probably handle smaller surf too as the tail is inbetween a rounded pin and a thumb tail. Im not gonna surf much bigger than hawaiian 8 foot. If i do, it will only be once or twice in order to remain in one piece!

Anything over 3 boards when entering Bali, customs will hit you with board tax

Yeah, Well, if Im only taking 3 boards in a 4 board bag, that allows me to take my semi gun as it has glass ons.

I think the waves Im going to encounter are mostly going to warrant the step up board - and the K board is in the same kind of terretory as the fish.

I will take;

Step up

Fish

Semi gun

Thanks for the input everyone. Does anyone else have any recommendations for what airlines to go with?

hey jonny,

traveling with 3 boards max is probably the best. It's already going to anoy youin asia, more would probably be a mistake if you want to travel easy.

I'd take my home shaped board if I where you though : you shaped the thing, doesn't it deserve that awesome trip you are planing ?
