I didn't think I'd be one of the guys writing about a serious health issue yet...  I'm only 47... Ha!

But - I found out last week why I've felt like walking away from everything in my life and sitting down to cry.

I have hypo-adrenalism - Meaning the hormones, namely cortisol, that are supposed to give me energy are about a third of what they should be.  And, I have way to much estrogen.  Plus some earlier related low thyroid issues.

How this happened is not exactly clear, nor does the "cure" appear to be very clear, because it isn't clear what "caused" the conditions.

I am taking some natural forms of thyroid and adrenal support,  sublingual cortisol type supplement, and progesterone cream.  All this is prescribed by my naturopath.

As you may be able to imagine, it came as no surprise that my body was fucked up - explains why I hardly care to work on my board, check the surf, log in and reply here, and why I feel like drying up and blowing away by the end of the work day.  But, the dark cycle I'm challenged by is the lack of an obvious answer/cure, and the lack of energy I have to deal with the situation.

Thus - here I am asking the Sway-family if anyone has had similar experience, and advice/direction....

Thanks for any thoughts -

Sorry to hear that youre not at full power Taylor, your posts are always worth reading.

After many years working in nursing I can only suggest some basics.

1. Share your diagnosis with your family so they can be aware of the changes they may see in you.

2. Arm yourself with as much info as you can get off the net.( Taken with a pinch of salt)  Knowing more about any condition will help you to see where you stand.

3. Get a 2nd diagnosis. See another specialist because some are more 'on the ball' than others.

4. Take change as a guide to a better life.           Lemons or lemonade ?

Best wishes, Brett.

Reading between the lines, and I could be wrong,  it seems a visit to a regular doctor has not been involved in this.

Being a DIY kind of guy and very well educated, I can tell you that that the well of information that these natural 'professionals' draw from for applicable herbs and OTC remedies can be  contained in 1 reference manual, although I had 3 overlapping ones for comprehensive reference to all the remedies and herbs. I went through a health crisis a couple of decades ago and more or less brought myself up to the level of knowledge of a cheap natural health professional hack by reading many materials over a couple of years and was not impressed by the number of books and level of knowledge it took to get there.
I've had friends visit these kind of 'professionals' and have been shocked at some of the old medicine(old, abandoned and superceded OTC remedies) that were advised to my friends and at charge. As if paying for what doctors were dispensing as advice and remedies at the early 1900's or even up to the early 50's and then abandoned could be carved out as a career.

My experience is that anyone with the required intellegence and curiosity and drive can become their own naturopath.
However, I presume with your naturopath you are getting up to date and modern stuff. I dont see a problem with your choice of an alternative health professional , nor do I understand your situation.
Anyhow, I guess I'm saying if its that serious, you really need to stick with a regular modern medicine doctor until you can be properly diagnosed.

The alternative health route should only be option after modern medicine turns out to be a dead end or if *perhaps* you are one of those hypersensitives whereby every modern drug you've tried the side effect were just overwhelming(although I dont think this case applies)....then the natural or less effective , non-modern or not FDA controlled remedies are to be preferred.

It could be that maybe you have been to a regular doctor, but maybe have abandoned the route.

I am a prayerful man, you have been added.

Hi Taylor -

Don't feel too bad.  I saw my cardiologist Friday and I've been dry-docked until they can make another attempt at straightening out my heart rhythm.  I already went through an ablation procedure that was supposed to fix it but short story - it didn't work.

It happens when I go surfing or engage in other strenuous activity.

I obtained copies of my heart rhythm when it's on the fritz.  I guess I could have just as easily gone to the morgue as gone home after my last surf.

My ticker went crazy for 8 pages during a holter recording.  No wonder I felt like crap.

It's called V-Tach and it went like this....

You gotta power through it man. I have a shit load of problems and I have days when I don't even get out of bed, but somehow I get through. I've had to deal with Coronary artery disease including a heart attack since 1998, at 39. Then I found that I had 2 badly damaged disks in my neck, which required bone fusion of C5-7. Then I went through treatment for depression, only to find out that I have a very bad sleep apnea. The sleep apnea is probably the root cause of most of my health issues. I had surgery for the apnea, but I still have it bad.

I did some serious soul searching about a decade ago, when I started thinking I was clinically depressed, and found my way back to God. I've trusted God's judgement since then. Amazing things happen when you believe in God's power.

When I was at my darkest time, I always found some strength thinking about riding waves. I've gotten through a lot since the late 70's just being near the ocean and watching it, thinking about the time I'll be able to be back out there riding waves.

You may have to work back into shape slowly, but don't let yourself get depressed. The mind is an amazing thing, and positive thinking can do wonders. Same for negative thinking, it can do you in. Stay positive, ask for help from the heavens above, and never give up the thought about surfing again.

Thanks for all the feedback you guys.

I have not been to a regular medical doc..  I am not against it, but I've been working with my naturopath/acupunturist for years, and I have had great results with my shoulder/back problems.  It just came up in our conversation how I was feeling, so we did a hormone test, and here I am...  I have been thinking about what a regular doc would say.  I'll study up more soon, and report back.

John - My thoughts and prayers go out to you my friend - This has got to be one of the hardest times of the year to be sitting it out...  Maybe you need to get back in the prison, so you have a focus for your extra energy... ;-)

"Take change as a guide to a better life."

This is where I'm leaning the most.  Time to update the five year plan.

Thanks again -

Sorry to hear of your condition. You should probably have a regular medical doctor run the hormone tests on you also. This is the type of condition in which doctors legally prescribe steroids for hormone therapy. The doctor would probably prescribe you low dosage which should minimize the chances of negative side effects but enough to put the pep back in your step and get you out of this funk you're feeling. Hope this doesn't offend anyone. Steroids aren't just for muscleheads. They do have their place in medicine when used responsibly.

Do you live in an area with flouride in the water supply?

Calcium flouride is down right deadly to some people.

If so get really good filters or don't drink Tap water.

Don't eat soy of any type it's high in natural estrogens.

Avoid eating from plastics with bisphenol A an estrogin mimicing toxin.

Try Korean ginseng IT WILL PUT YIN IN YOUR YANG!

As I age I have noticed the further away from it's natural state food gets the less well it makes me feel and even when I think I'm eating healthy I am not.

The more processed the food is the cheaper it tends to be and the more adverse health problems it will produce.

Sorry to hear about the health issues.

Chemicals and GMO are slowly killing everyone.

Tachyochardia is a bitch!

Are they trying to tell you you have to many nerves in your heart?

Stress is the big culprit!

Weight is another one and last you may not be able to handle caffeine.

You need clean food and water a nice white sand beach, a couple of good boards, warm water, in a tropical local with a great uncrowded no drama reef break and some pretty girls to look at!

Take six months of the above and nothing else I would wager a million dollars you would come back from it healthy as a horse.

That goes for the rest of us stressed out over worked under paid blood bags being squeezed for to much by society.

Interesting article recently in the New Yorker, about the Dali lama...he had/has health issues. What helps ?  MEAT !!!  Paul McCartny (Beatle guy) was bent out of shape by the news..screw him. See a medical specialist in that field, two if you have doubts. Keep the meds/whatever, simple..no meds to counter the effects of the one that you take to counter the effects of..you get the picture. It may take time to get 'it' all balanced again..one foot in front of the next, keep going. Good luck
