The "pics of 2+1 setups thread". Pics, or info please, longboards, short, mid etc.

Im starting a thread for 2+1 fin setup's. Searching 2+1 in the archives doesnt really bring up much. I've been riding my 7'10'' a lot lately, and really like the setup in it, which is a 7'' flexy centre fin, and shapers australia SB sidebites.

21-raked-2-.jpg.

I have some occy fins that im going to try with an old thruster fin that fits in a LB box.

thruster-set-up-710.jpg

Im keen to see/hear what size/brand/shape fins everyone uses for their 2+1's. Any sort of 2+1, short egg, midlength, longboard etc.

Thinking of getting a 6.5'' centre fin, and using the occ sides with that, to add some manouverability, though im happy with how it goes with the first setup.

Cheers

Fin set up on my new "retro" carbon DVS 8' all rounder.

Sidebites are 8.5cm tall with an 8.5cm base.

Centre fin is 21cm tall with a 14cm base.

Riding it today with the centre fin all the way forward in the box in chunky point waves and plenty of hold.

I'd be trying some smaller sidebites if I was you Mark (which I'm not). Paging Chipfish.

Re: [bizgravy] The "pics of 2+1 setups thread". Pics, or ...

I recently made this one, for small days and was hoping that it will noseride . deep single channel in the nose, and 2+1 setup.

I have not ridden it yet but have put some copys of H2 fcs outlines as the side fins and hope to test this setup soon!

I figured smaller side fins (trainer wheels, Ive heard them called) and a big center fin is the traditional setup but looks interesting to try big front fins, let us Know how the board goes with the different setups Beerfan...

Re: [nocean] The "pics of 2+1 setups thread". Pics, or ...

SOme nice looking fins and boards guys. I took out the thruster setup this morning in foot overhead punchy beachbreak. Went really well, and released off the top very well. I don't know if it was the fin setup, or because the waves had some decent punch, but i really liked it. The back of the centre fin is 8'' from the tail hahaha. Im thinking of even trying some twin fins on the side with the same small centre fin, for smaller stuff. Should be interesting.

I also just recieved a winged keel that bunyip has lent me. Can't wait to try that as well.

Nocean, what's the cant on the side bites?> I have a friend who uses the h-2's on his 9 mal, with a greenough centre fin.

Im now stuck between buying an fcs adaptor, so i can use my fcs fins in in, or buying a 6 1/2'' centre fin. hmmm. Its fun to experiment with fins!!.

Re: [beerfan] The "pics of 2+1 setups thread". Pics, or ...

Just so were on the same page ,, a cutaway fin is a flex fin

heres what I feel is goin on...

A little looser feeling when your compressed in a bottom turn cause the fin flex's or loads up, then when you end the turn the fin unloads and gives you the momentum or drive that was lost in the bottom turn

you really dont feel the loss in the bottom turn because of all the enertia and momentum, but when the fin springs back you can feel the effect, at least I can

some like it, some dont, and some dont notice it

try this ,, Longboard with single standard fin, surf it for a few days then try a single flex or cutaway fin of the same size or larger,,,

I really love the Guy Takyama flex fins they be workin great for me!!!

Re: [kensurf] The "pics of 2+1 setups thread". Pics, or ...

Thanks mate. I found that a similar thing after i cut the back 1/2'' of the black fin. It seemed to flex more, and be more responsive, i think going from a fat tip, to a much thinner tip helped. I'll hunt around the crew and see if i can borrow a cutaway.

Cheers mate.

Thats an awesome looking  board ! ^

beerfan: the h2 copys on my board are standard 5 degree cant but the ones you buy have extra cant like 8 or 9 which might aid turning even more as side fins? not really sure but hope to test board soon!

Re: [nocean] The "pics of 2+1 setups thread". Pics, or ...

Yep, that's a sweet board for sure!.

Im pretty sure they're more than normal, that's why i ask. Though i think just the angular shape will make a difference. Ride report please!.

Jusr ordered a 6.5" fin, which should be here tomorrow. I'll be keen to try the little side bites again, but with the 6.5.

THe thruster setup is definately a great setup for punchy, or hollow waves, where you dont need to obtain as much drive as possible, but for the regular, fat, small stuff, i think the 2+1 suits better. I guess the choice is, more manouverability, or more drive, but with more drawn out turns. Both are good in their own way. It's great to have choices!!

Hey,

Great looking boards!!

Great thread! Im in the process of building a 7'0" pill/funboard shape that is 19" x 23.5" x 16.25" with 2" tail rocker and 4 3/4 " of nose rocker that I was thinking of doing a 2 + 1 set u on, Wide ......I know... But it works for my 6'7" 255lb frame.

Id love for you guys to share your fin locations  for your boxes on the boards posted as well as side bite locations. Cant and toe in would be also be appreciated.. I went with a single fin on my last pill that I like but want to really loosen it up and make it a little more high performence.

Any thoughts?

Here's my addition (dunno how to upload pics into the actual post but its attached)(and yes I can look it up but im in a rush)

5'6" x 20" x 2.5"

I prefer it as a 2+1 because I have a heavy foot and crave drive but its fun as a single (not that into cutaways on a board this small - just a preference)

ps to "nocean" i like that cat in your pic haha.  can you feel that nose scoop when riding?  i like it!

2"x2" sidebites / ?"superchargers"?

small sideys , with an assortment of back fins [fin boxed] , ranging from 4 1/2 - 8" deep

by the way , a lot / most of the fins mentioned are home -made

regarding photos .....

i don't know the EXACT threads where most of the photos of these fin setups are , [ my former username , "chipfish61" ,  posted them , mostly , from memory] .

IS it possible to topic specific  'searches' on swaylocks any more ??? [when i type in words to the google search thingy up the top , i don't seem to have much luck ]

....maybe if the old swaylocks "advanced search" facility was still here , i'd be able to post up some links ..... but most of you are probably tired / bored with  seeing my fins and board [bored?] photos by now anyway , yes ? [i think it might be time for another  'username' change , and some new fins to be made , but , unfortunately , money's too tight to mention , at present.....]

by the way ....this is a great  thread , "beerfan" [mark] !! thanks , mate !

i look forward to hearing [??seeing?? hint hint ...know anyone with a good digital camera and zoom ??] how rides on your different "2+1"setups go ...

Ben!

I owe you a letter mate! I'll take some pics and measurements for you. It's unfortunately not actually my board, but if it were, I'd inclined to try one of the really long, raked, flexy fins Mick has been playing with as a centre. Check out the fin on the green board second from the top of the rack, that's the sort of thing.

Chip, If your brother is up here definitely have him get in touch, that'd be awesome. Here's another 2 + 1 for you (I love the things so any excuse to post a few pics), shaped by Tim Griffin. His boards are amazing, I'm still frothing over that Lynch Design baby swallow single fin, and he did a really nice widowmaker version of a Seebold shape for some lucky fella down in the SD area.

more 2+1 setups

been riding these two setups for the last week

PICT0038.jpg picture by chippy61

this one , the 7'er with the upright fin and upright side fins surfs / feels like about a 6'6 , i reckon . it goes up the face really well [i caught a coupla head-high rights on it]. now if i use that setup on a more rockered board [eg, the 6'6 ] , it should go GREAT , i reckon !!

this is the 9'4 mal , that i've been using MOST days [autumn has been mainly small so far here , but that could change with the storms we're "expecting"
this week ...might move some sand around , hopfully, for some MUCH needed BANKS !!]

PICT0067.jpg picture by chippy61

[ just enough side fin area to hold it in on the more hollow ones...it sideslipped a bit without them !]

still to test ...

Re: [chipfins61] more 2+1 setups

Good stuff ben. Im still mucking around with fins in the 7'10'', great to experiment, and loving the different setups. THruster is my fave for coming off the the lip, but 2+1 for drawn out, section beating turns.

Cheers

Re: [chipfins61] more 2+1 setups

I'll get off my arse in the next few days and post a pic of my new 6.5'' centre fin, that i use with shapers sidebites. It's also a shapers fin ( shapersaustralia.com.au ). It's quite stiff, with nowhere near as much flex as the deeper black fin, but it's a bit more upright. I think because it is not as deep, it's more manouverable. It's a good "in between" setup, as in, it's looser than the 7'' centre fin+side bites, but more drivey than the thruster  setup. I like it, almost the best of both worlds.

Playing with fins is soooo much fun.

yep i've been a fan of sidefins 1/2 the height of the main fin for quite a few years now . none of my friends were interested , they laughed for years , couldn't give fins to them to try at all ! [thank goodness for swaylocks eh ?!]

[i think it was an article by dave pamenter in a 1990s longboard mag that confirmed it for me , and got me hanging to try different stuff [as in : MAKING fins myself , to play with]

     cheers

Chipfins..had a set of them curved fins, do agree they felt fast, especially over the flat sections. Could really feel the difference between these and the standard side fins. Too bad they don't make them anymore. My buddy snapped one of the sidefins, so its still somewhere on the sea bed. He now shares his bed with a horses head :)

I've posted this board before in a different thread but here it is again.

6'3"  x  13 1/4" /19 1/4" /15"  x  2 5/8"  round tail with a small wing

goes rail to rail really easily.  holds a higher line on the wave a lot better than the single fins that i had been riding lately and you can get much more vertical off the bottom.  works great in softer waves, not so good in fast top to bottom surf (i think the rocker is more the reason for that though- pretty low entry).  very fast; no "huntington hop" for speed, just lean forward and give her a little pump.  perfect for summer time.

I got my twin keel back, and lent the board out to the same bloke. When i get it back, i'm gunna try my spitifre in it. Cant wait for that. And yes ben i will update with pics.

Re: [beerfan] The "pics of 2+1 setups thread". Pics, or ...

Bit of an update. I've been surfing the thruster setup for a while now, and i can't go back!!!. I lose a bit of drive, but it only means in small fat waves i have to get forward. Trimming from the front of the board is less stable but still possible. The plus side is manouverability. I was high up and out on the shoulder this morning, and easily managed to bring it down, around back to the foam, and keep going on the wave, without losing any speed. Felt unreal to bring such a big board around so fast and smooth!!. Stoked!

Well, i bent one of the thruster side fins, so today i used it as a 2+1 again, as the first setup in the first post. First few waves felt like i couldn't turn the thing, but once i got used to using my weight on the rail, i had a ball!!, and got some pretty decent turns in, with a good lip bash thrown in for good measure haha. Think i'll keep it as is for some more "trial and error" hehe.

I'm happy.  It's 2-1/2" at the base. I've tried another, 6-1/2" center fin with a 4-1/2" base on a 9'6" version of the same board and didn't care for it.  The 7.0" cut is loose but positive.  Despite being shoved that far forward, it doesn't tail-slide or spin out even in overhead surf.

I've since duplicated the shorter board's fin configuration on the longer board and plan to leave it that way.  I do have to say that a couple of single fins I also ride maintain forward momentum in much soup much better, but those are 9-1/2" fins with 6-1/2" and 7-3/4" bases (and the boards they're on have a lot more volume) so that certainly comes as no surprise.

Single fins:

Wondering what happens when you push centre fin foreward to halfway up sidebiters.....the Mackle seems to have this set up but i was thinking  of it

on my 9 footer. 8''centre swept quite back. Would it make it looser or is the flow all wrong . nowhere near water at the moment which means cant experiment

cheers
