Want to build a wood hollow core sailboard

#1 Back to Top

Hi from the sunny, landlocked Ozarks!

No waves here but lots of beautiful clear water and some pretty good wind. I'd like to build a custom sailboard to feed my windsurfing jones. Love my plastic boards but I have a need for cellulose. I've seen several sites that have kits for SUP's or surfboards but nothing on windsurfers. What advice can I get from you experts? Is there a website or book you could recommend? I have some carpentry skills so I'd like to do hollow core wood versus a foam core. Can you help?

Thanks!

Hey Shitake

you could take a look over at treetosea.org (a dedicated hollow wooden board site) there have been a couple of guys making kite-boards with inserts so it might be just a case of combining some of that with some of the traditional hollow methods. Presuming that the biggest difference is going to be the insert for the masty thing? Anyhow there'll be something useful for you over there I'm sure. Dead friendly as well.

Hollow wooden sailboards! There was once, long long time ago a hollow composite manufacturer Aerospoon I think they were called.. super light and fast.

Far NW corner of Arkansas. Great place! We have the Buffalo River and the wilderness associated with it, good climbing, clear lakes, UofA "GO HOGS", soveral of the world's largest companies headquartered here and a small town vibe with world class amenities....hell we even got indoor plumbing last week!

Over at Standupzone.com they were discussing this very thing recently for a SUP/Sail hybrid.  'Heave' has been doing balsa compsands over XPS Standup Paddle/Sail boards that look really nice.   There is a pic and description of one of his boards as well as links to an earlier article on Ponohouse.

Also found plans from 1949 on eBay...
