ambrose - I am so glad to read your post... I've missed you, and was thinking about calling to see if all was well.  I thought you may have had some of your particular brand of wisdom to share on some other threads...

As it is - Peace to us all.

we sent dale some donation money too.

and dint order a mat.

bought one from paul gross for my daughter in taiwan.

It came in three days.

Pauls mats come quick

order one.You wont hava gripe.

wouldn't it be Ironic if the dale mat came too?

which one would you ride?

a thousand a month is more than dale makes

I'll bet.I hope you find somthing else to gripe about.

I cherish my mat,and the other one ,a K mat.

I have an old custom that needs a valve.

I wouldn't part with any one of them, even my old leaky one...

pray for dale ,he can feel it I'm sure...

I am praying for your mat.

god bless don's mat

on earth as it is in heaven

may he soon ride it and

may he cherish it

as much as I cherish my own

in the name of the outside sets

the inside section and the Mysto spots.

aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhmen.

...ambrose...

and forgive us our drop -ins

as we for give those who drop in on us.

surf for world peace.uptightness makes

the surf go flat and blown out. I've seen it happen.

Yeah, I have bought two 4th Gear Flyers from Paul, who is great guy and both mats arrived in about two weeks.  I love them and everyone who uses mine are super stoked and have a huge grin on their faces coming out of the waves.

I actually bought the second one because especially when I am in Costa Rica there's a line of requested borrowers.  Got tired of not having full instant access to a mat.

I knew of Paul because of knowing of George Greenough, I went to UCSB and saw him at Rincon and The Ranch in '69-70(?), biggest and longest lasting north swell in CA in the past 25 years. Also attened premier showing of "Innermost Limits of Pure Fun" at Wilderness Surfboards in Santa Barbara.

I was actually trying to track down one of Greenough's Velo's. Paul had two, one was the one I saw GG riding for a mere $12,000. He also has GG's original metal forms, and makes his own version of "knee machines" (a name I gave to GG's surfcraft as I didn't know what he called them!). Rocketships built for deep tube exploration.

It was GG's statement that he had never ridden any faster than mats that FORCED me to invest. However, I am still saving up for a Paul Goss knee machine because it more closely compares to board surfing. The mats require a much more subtle style and input (which I think only Greenough REALLY has mastered). Not to mention what a job it is to get mats out to the lineup in bigger waves!

I would have been cool if Dale had simply responded (maybe a "thanks") to my offer just to keep my money, or not contacted me again re details which reignited my anticipation of finally receiving my mat.

So it goes.

i don't think paul is making boards these days, especially greenough type kneeboards. the time and effort he puts into building one (about 100 hours tatrt to finish) doesn't pan out $ wise to make it worth his while unless you are ready to pay at least 3 grand. his mats, by the way, are the best available.

You are correct about Paul not making boards, I'm probably only the third or fourth person who has tracked him down for the purpose of a GG Velo (as in velosity, which they have out the ass).  Board-delaminating bottom turns made it appear that he had been towed-in and shot 20-30 yards at warp speed.

And when I last inquired he only had one of his own used boards to sell and would make them for around $2,500 ('06?).  If the money fairy were to visit I'd definitely ask him to build me a custom "Signature Model"!

Also want to have a Paipo board (I grew up in Honolulu), but the dimensions 40"H x 30"W x 2" (approximately) just seem too big, particularly the width. I am waiting to see one in person next Hawaii trip. They are like a Velo, but much less sophisticated engineering and design.

sent a guy to paul gross last week

he sent me this letter:

paul suggested a "standard" mat for me and he made a custom "standard" for tara, all he said was hers is a 1/4" thinner than mine. i ordered them today, as soon as he got my paypal transfer he went out to the shed and put 'em together. they're already in the mail and hopefully we can be on our new mats by the weekend. not bad for $330 total

i'll let you know how it goes...

have fun

jordan

...ambrose...

some peace

when I heard he that he had a heart attack I emailed him offering to allow him to consider my $350 payment for a raft as donation to a fellow waterman if he was financially desperate.

a noble gesture.

Well, what can anyone of us say?

For those that have done their dough $$$, myself included [2 mats paid for, not supplied] I feel very disappointed, more for the lack of courtesy, and forthright communication.

I considered myself a friend of Dale's, but to be on the receiving end of this dishonourable behaviour, isn't a good feeling, especially as it had been dragging on for many, many years - 10+.

I do often think about his situation, which I have been told isn't great, and have complete empathy, however we all have our stories and circumstances that life serves us up, but that doesn't excuse what by any standards is nothing short of disgraceful business practices.

The lessons learned are numerous...
