wich bottom contour?
hi
i want to shape this board i attached as pdf. i want to surf most of the time under headhigh slower waves in north europe.
im 5.7 and 145 lbs.
fins will be 5 fin setup. (mckee)
rails: thinner to suit my weight
Tail: rounded daimond/ 2 winger at fins (for release/speed and easy turning)
but i am not sure wich bottom setup to choose. first i thought about a single all the way. deepest at fins(1/4) at center1/8(maybe a little less?)
but i am not sure if the single will work together with the wide tail. will ist still corner with ease? or should i go with a double with vee under the backfoot for easyer turning?
thanks for your input
klaus

Re: [klausw] wich bottom contour?
For low, weak surf under head high, I vote for either a shallow single concave the whole way, or flat to slight vee, kind of like an old school fish bottom. I think double concaves are not necessary in smaller, weaker surf, so a simple bottom might be best.

thanks for your input.
shallow= 3/8 at deepest or more/less??

Re: [klausw] wich bottom contour?
sorry i meant 3/16 concave
Re: [klausw] wich bottom contour?
Under head high waves, you could easily leave it flat.
Surfing for me is mostly two turns and a wipeout
Re: [klausw] wich bottom contour?
Klaus. That is a lot of board at 5'7" 145 lb . you can and should reduce the volume a bit. If you really like that outline, at your height and weight I would ride that at 5'9" x 20.5" . As for the bottom, flat to subtle V should work or even a very minor single to subtle double concave will work. keep the rails downish for planning and relax that nose rocker something around 4 3/8" should be plenty in gutless waves. I have never needed more than 4 3/4 nose rocker on a board for waves under a foot overhead. Other than that, the board looks like it will be nice and skatey, plane easily and with 5 fins hold in through some serious rail carves.

Re: [klausw] wich bottom contour?
deep single through to the tail about 5 mm deep in and taper out at the tail.
Re: [klausw] wich bottom contour?
yep, for maximum planing run a single thru the whole board...maybe fade it to flat at tail for a more stable neutral ass end, or blend in a subtle vee for easy rail initiation.....or just do it the way you want and learn from it.....
