... 'show me your garage'

OR...

your cupboard, or your wine cellar, or your balcony , or your roof, or your loungeroom, or your basement, or your shop....

...Where else do you guys shape your boards?

" Dane's 4 ' 11 " fish " I shaped in my bathroom.... and hicksy and gray have both seen the size of that [ the bathroom, not the fish ]

Hey CHip

Amazing where boards are whittled out! There is a picture of my bay on my site. Just one wall but the other side is similar just with a workbench. wall clock and thermometer is essential. I have heat and A/C now too! Use Home depot foam to cover windows while doin U/V lams. Highly reccommend the U/V if you have the spot. I won't lam with mekp at all any more...

DMAN - I also drape my tool & storage racks with tarps when mowing foam. Makes for much easier cleanup in a small, multi-use space.

Last time I put a photo of my shop on here I caught flak. Surfore said his wife was yelling at him about the mess in my garage. It was even called "as bad as Spitzer's". So I cleaned it up & rearranged some stuff. But no new photos yet...

Spence -

Nice job on the Mind Machine photo essay! Shows how much goes into shaping a hull bottom. The forward hull blending to the single/double concave shows some really fine shaping skill. Also thanks for showing it like it is... I get all pissed off when I see magazine ads of some guy who has obviously cleaned up each planer cut to make it look like a precision bevel - as if anybody really shapes like that! Every shaper I've ever seen (except maybe Jim Phillips in the master Shaping video or perhaps a computerized machine) cleans up their planer cuts with a sanding block exactly like you show on your site.

Re: [chipfish61] show me your shaping bay...

here is the old bay...where board #1 was built and

here is the new bay still evolving but getting ready for the next project.

it is a smaller space but it will be a perminant shapping/glassing room/workshop.
hope to get it painted and get the lights shelved and mounted soon,
but for now they are just ballanced like in the origional bay.

b.t.w. what height are your lights?
a) level with the top of your shaping stands
b) above and by how much?

Re: [chipfish61] show me your shaping bay...

I threw up some walls in my moms garage in the late eighties, slapped together some 2x4s for shaping racks, hung some 4 foot lights on the walls, bought a Clark 8'2"M and started whittling away. Some 40 or so boards later, it evolved into having a vacuum system, steel shaping stands and is still in need of some 8 foot lights. I could also use use an a/c for shaping on them hot summer afternoons...

Basement workshop. I set up a window fan with a home made shroud to work as an exhaust fan, to draw a vacuum and keep fumes from going up into the house. Old stereo with big speakers. Cable modem. Heat. :)

That's one of the most innovative things I've heard in a long time... have you managed to convince the school that as it is a science experiment, they sould be funding the cost of materials.

Also, try to hit them up for some "testing" time on the experiment :)

Re: [chipfish61] show me your shaping bay...

Got no digital cam yet so... But, I gotta throw my vote in, for the low level multi-use crowd, on the stand alone movable racks - buckets with handles, you can move around - even roll - adjust to different boar lengths etc. Ah, yes, the hanging plastic too. All good stuff. Thanks to all for sharing. Peace, mahalo, Taylor

My shaping bay is in an open carport. Dirt, dust, dog hair, pollen, and the roof leaks when it rains. The light is always changing. The view is killer, though. I love it. mike

I use my shed... I use the seat on the lawn mower for a rack for my glass and the random plants are good for draining out the bowl with resin in it, and I got the vintage chlorine bucket shaping stands...

Re: [have] show me your shaping bay...

Howzit have, By any chance did you guys watch "Monster Garage" monday night. They rebuilt and modified a woody and had a shaper from Hawaii (never heard of him) shape 2 longboards for the show right out side the garage entrance. He set it up in 1 day using a party tent, tarp, lights, etc. Aloha,Kokua

Re: [DanB] How come blue walls

DanB, the blue backround is a nice contrasting color to the white foam so that you can see your outline, rails or whatever better..I use to have black walls but now use blue. I actually liked the black better,

Re: [chipfish61] show me your shaping bay...

yeah those black walls do look like they would be good....the blue is great to me , especially since they used to be white ,and that made it hard to see imperfections....no i diddnt see that episode of monster garage but it could always be on again when im flipping through....no,,, that is not one of feraldaves designs...although his art is probably what inspired it,,,he does some of the best artwork i have seen...to me anyway ,,,i just really like that style ,but rarely do anything like that

Here's my *cough cough*...Uhhh....Shaping "bay". The only reason I'll even call it a bay right now is because the rains are making it look like one...But hey, it works.

Re: [tenover] show me your shaping bay...

hi tenover !

just a couple of questions...

how does the rain + electricity go , together ?

do the neighbours complain about "the smell" ?

also, about " the noise" ?

I guess the best part is .... you can MOW the resin drips off your floor , after it's all finished !
