Session # 1 - Surfer Divas - Sponsored by Cerritos College
For those that attended the Cerritos College Forum IV, You were introduced to Teri Tsosie, and the program to work with and teach a number of 7th and 8th grade girls how to build surfboards. These girls are very enthusiastic and great to work with. Terry Price and I did a presentation at the girls school, and I was VERY impressed on the kind of projects they are working on and skills they exhibit.
If you would like to help in this activity, please contact either Terry Price at Cerritos, or Teri Tsosie and let them know you are willing to volunteer.
This is a great opportunity to return some of the skills and expertise you have learned either on Swaylocks or at the previous Cerritos Surfboard Forums.
The sessions will run from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM with a BBQ at the end of each session.

This flyer was done for the students wishing to build the boards. What we would like is to have some mentors for the girls while they do most of the work. We wanted to have an adult shaper there to rough out the blank with a planer, then let the girls do the rest with sandpaper.
The goal is to have the students do as much of the work as possible. This goes for the laminating, and finishing. For the router work for the fin boxes, we again wanted some adult shapers. We already have some volunteers, but could use some more help. If you have a few extra weekends you could spare, we would love to have you join us!!! I think you will be surprised on how much work the girls are willing to do!

To All:
Just a little more info on the Surfer Divas project. I (American Blanks) have donated a variety of EPS blanks to the project. If you are able to help, there will be a 6' 0" Shortboard, 6' 8" fish blank, a 7' 4" funboard, and a 9' 2" longboard. The longboard will be done by the teacher (Teri) and some of the mom's. Should be a lot of fun, and you may learn a thing or to as well!

Ken,
FYI - I spoke with Teri at the end of 4/22 event and will be there this Sunday to help the teams build a board. Another bonus, my Mom is are very accomplished artist and I mentioned to Teri that it would be a really fun / good way for the girls to connect with the boards they are making if they design and spray the artwork for the boards.

Spoke to several folks that have the skills, but are reluctant to participate. I think if you could take some time an participate in this project, I think both you and the girls would be so stoked, you would be looking forward to the next session. Please give it some thought...

Today was the first session of the Surfer Divas. We had a lot of help by several professional shapers, John Reinhard, owner/shaper of the Uhuru Surfboards, and also one of the very few women shapers, Molly Logan. I want to thank them both for giving up their Sunday to help in this project.
We started out with some classroom discussion...
Then we set up the teams....
Then got togetherr with the shapers/mentors that would help in the board building....
I would like to mention Teri Tsosie, who was one of the instigators of this project as well as Dena Sparks, who heads up the surfing club as well as being the instructor.

This is Molly, in white, with Dena on the left and Teri on the right. We set up enough teams to do a 6'3" short Board, 6'8" Fish, 7'4" Fun board, and a 9'2" Longboard.

The girls did a great job of jumping in to do as much of the work as they could. In no particular order, the girls names are Sarah Schenker, Melissa (Mo) Scholz, Brooke Beekman, Tara Murphy, Megan McCann, Michele Moody and Kelly Hutchison. They all did a great job!!!!

I would once again thank Terry Price, Department Head, for hosting this first session of the Surfer Divas. Without his support none of the forums would have happened.
I need to also thank all the other volunteers at Cerritos for helping. Rick, Mike, Orlie, Jerry as well as Karen for helping set up the workshop.

Next Sunday will be session number 2 of the Surfer Divas. We will finish the shaping of the boards, seal the blanks and install the fin boxes. If you can join us and help with this projects success, please schedule a little time to share your expertise. I think you will find this quite rewarding, and I can promise you a free lunch to boot!!!

We will be having session # 2 this Sunday May 7th, at Cerritos College, and finish up the shaping of the boards, router the fin boxes, seal the blanks, and the most important part!...the BBQ!!! For more information and contacts, please read previous posts.

How did session #2 go? Sorry I missed out as I was on a business trip. Please keep me posted on the next scheduled event. From what I recall there is no session on 5/14 because of Mother's Day. Can't wait to work with the girls again!

Session # 2 went well. You can check out the pic's on Sways, under Session 2. We missed having you there and look forward to the next session. We were able to do the rail bands, and get most of the boards shaped. We are going to work on installing the fin boxes and sealing the blanks this week. The plan is to have the boards ready for final sanding and graphics on the next get-together. At that point we should be able to glass one side of the boards and be back on schedule.
