the shortest nose riding longboard?
high all,
i'm packing my bags and heading to central america for my winter surf trip and i've been thinking a lot about what boards i pack.
due to size constraints i usually leave my nose rider behind. i tend to lean towards more 'performance' type surfing and want to bring what short boards i can, but i really miss that 'glide' on the small days.
so i've been wondering about how small a nose riding board can get...
is it possible to get that long board nose riding glide feel from something under 7' in length?
i weigh 150lbs, stand 5'11" tall, and surf both short and long boards.
any suggestions?
thanks,
-jar

Re: [jar] the shortest nose riding longboard?
Heavy, parallel, flat, super soft rails should do it.
Make the only nose rocker the thickness coming out - if your board is 3" thick in the middle and 1/2" thick at the tip: boom. 2.5" nose rocker :)
Dimensions like 20-23-17 and 7" square across the tail. Big pivot fin. Volan glass. 50/50 rails. Smooth bottom - no concaves, vee, belly, etc to slow you down or make it twitchy...
Don't give in to the temptation to make it more egg-like or 'versatile'. Don't put in a little kick of nose rocker or a little edge on the rails or boxes for side fins...that kind of compromise makes boards ok at lots of things, but really good at nothing. Stick to the plan & it would be fine.
John Mellor sent me a copy of a Clark catalog from 1983 or so. All the blanks that said "good noserider" (mostly Takayama & Velzy plugs) were 8'0", 8'2"...I think the longest was 8'6". So yeah - no problem. Just stick to the plan. :)

Re: [jar] the shortest nose riding longboard?
i made a board a few years ago called the "shlong board' (short longboard). it's a longboard plan shape, cut down to 6'6", with an overall flat rocker, full rails, flat bottom, and single fin only. the guy i made it for loves it...it instantly became his new "go to" board over his 9'1" pintail longboard and 6'2" Moss Research "Spacecake". i rode it a few weeks ago in some slow, but walled up rib-high surf, and stuck a long cheater 5. the board is very fast. even up at the nose, a shortyboarder dropped in ahead of me and i passed him without ever getting off the nose.

There is a dude in Aus who makes boards at 7' that he reckons you can hang 10 on...

Now i haven't ridden one, but the nose concave is the interesting part, its not blended at all. It looks like those aliens who make the crop circles have attacked the bottom of the board. There is a pic in the galleries section of the bottom of the board, but it doesn't show much detail.
Re: [soulstice] the shortest nose riding longboard?
hey soulstice,
so what you'r saying is that you have a short shlong?
brave man.
it really does sound like a fun board. do you think an extra 6" might get me 10 off the nose?
how does it turn from up there?
and pics?

thanks for the link dontbuyarabbit,
you were right about the photos... not enough there to really see all those bottom contours they're talking about.
it sounds quite interesting, but wouldn't all that turbulence cost something in speed, or does it turn into lift that far forward?
anyone?

STEVE BROM STEPCHILD (Coque's post): 6'10" x 22" x 2+5/8"

Re: [Coque] the shortest nose riding longboard?
I recently made this one for a girl surfing the Mediterranée (where waves are rather small and not very powerful). It's 6'6" and it has been reported to do the job quite finely.

It's not a new idea. Take alok at this old 6'0" GREG NOLL

From www.surfnhula.com:
"This is a rare 1969 Greg Noll Blob (we think it is) length 6' nose 20" width 23 1/4" tail 20" tail tip 14" and 3" thick."
... sorry about my English, folks.
Re: [neira] the shortest nose riding longboard?
Very greenough like fin.
Is it more like when they were trying to ride his spoon as stand up boards instead of a nose rider?
You dont know when its from?
Re: [High-pockets] the shortest nose riding longboard?
My guess is 1969.

Sorry, sick with the flu, heads not working right at all
Re: [jar] the shortest nose riding longboard?
i can't hang ten on the shlongboard because the tail won't hold. the guy i made it for is more of a tail-riding kinda guy, and he's running a 7" wingnut cutaway fin in it. i'm sure i could make a trip to the tip with more fin at the back.
i had never seen the Steve Brom "Stepchild" before...but the shlong board looks just like it. i swear i designed it all by myself.....honest!
anyhow, here's the shlong board in action (being ridden by the guy i made it for)................

Hi Jar,
I was experimenting with the same idea, works good for cheater 5 in the barrel, hang ten needs a lot of weight on the tail to keep the nose on sea level.
Very interested what you can make of the same idea, should become a new kind of board, not short or long.

Re: [soulnpower] the shortest nose riding longboard?
This board also has me interested. I was thinking of making two (a bigger one for me and a smaller one for my son's Doho board). I found this line drawing that might help.
Re: [DanB] the shortest nose riding longboard?
Hi DanB
What sizes are you thinking of?
Looks like an interesting design.

PS hey Chipper, did you already make something like this?

Re: [soulnpower] the shortest nose riding longboard?
I was thinking of making a 7 footer for myself and a 6'2" (scaled down) version for my 8 year old son. I would set his up with removable sidebites so he could ride it as a thruster until he learned not to ride it too close to the shore at Doheine (those rocks would play havoc with a big single fin). I just made a aps3000 file of what I was thinking (I didn't bother playing with the rail shape since I wouldn't cut it on the machine). I didn't mention it in my previous post but this is based on the Stepchild board)

does anyone know?

Re: [jar] the shortest nose riding longboard?
Hi Jar, that board isn't mine, i wish it was, but someone posted photos about it years back here on Swaylocks when Magicman was still a regular and when you described what you were searching for i just thought about the "Stepchild", searched the photos and posted them.
Also it's always an honor to show some work from Mr Steve Brom, the guy is a great shaper, a great person and a pleasure to deal with. I have a fish from him that i love, but haven't put enought time on it. Today i had my second and last surgery from an injury and i think my first session is going to be on the Brom in a couple weeks.
Coque.
PS: Also make a search for the Con Ugly, the idea i close to Brom's Stepchild.

I personally have never pulled it off on anything less than a 7'2" mini log.

Re: [Lavarat] i'm loving this thread! you guys/gals ROCK!
you can noseride anything. you need a log to hang ten and for glide and trim, but as far as a cheater 5 goes, it can be done on anything, even modern over rockered high performance shortboards. i used to have a 6'3 that i would noseride once in a while. just didnt seem like there was much of a point.

Where is Boonville, Ca ?
Mine is a Walden rip off. I call it the Short and Fat. Very fun board. I think we used a 7'3" B from Clark foam.
The board in my avatar is a 6'11" EPS foam. That one is my own template. It has never been riden. Only 2" thick. Check out the resources/photo archives.
Maybe I will sell you one...

Re: [mpcutback] the shortest nose riding longboard?
Check out surfysurfy.blogspot.com, look for the 5-fin "Thumb"-kind of a longboard planshape to a sharp, angled pintail, about 5'10" or so I think. Has images of it being noseridden by Rob Machado, it looks like a really interesting board!

etmo,
that's a cool looking board, but i'm not in a place where i can watch any vid!
i live at the last power pole on our road and on the best days, standing in a puddle, facing south, on tip toes, and wearing a tinfoil suit with a copper tie,
i might, just MIGHT, get the whooping connection speed of half modem...(28kbps).
it's no wonder it takes so long to search the photos section!
thanks for the link. wish i could see more of that board.

yup poser516, i cheat too!
6'4" round pin simon anderson tri with a single concave...
just not the same feel with 5 rubberized toes off the nose and my ass sticking out,
but i can't help but be impressed by the number of small longboard options i'm seeing here now.
i may not get 10 for long, but if the glide is right so might the ride be.

Re: [jar] the shortest nose riding longboard?
This is a 6'6" x 18 1/4" nose 22 wide and the tail is close to 17"
Its really flat, has a mild displacement hull, and has a Greenough 4 C fin. The board rides great at the bottome of the wave. When I first made it last summer the waves were tiny for a month and I rode it in below knee high waves. I had a blast on this thing. Its not much fun over shoulder high, but if you can plant your back foot over the fin it actually pivits and you can bottom turn and do a little snapper.
Although the nose has a little concave, I have rarely tride rideing the tip. I have been content so far with the glide, just standing a bit up from the middle of the board and letting the hull manage the speed for me.
This board is a total contrast from rideing quads because it derives its speed so low in the wave.
I'm trying to upload a pic of the rocker profile but heres the deck.

These are my 6'8"-7'4" funboards. The middle two you can run around on.The place I

The other picture is of a Walden Magic Compact disc that I saw when I was

made me think of this thread.I'm 6'2" &190lb and the best nose rider I

I agree, my best nose rides were on a super flexy 9' Bert Board. Recently I've be playing around with a board that Benny1 gave me loads of guidance on. My first one went okay, but the second one which incorporated a blending of Bert's and Benny's ideas has the potential of being magic.
