morning of the earth anomaly
morning of the earth anomaly
Just got back from coast[waves were not as promised, which was rather refreshing in a luddite way] where i watched the video Morning of the Earth which i had given to my mate after buying the DVd version 18 months ago..Much to my surprise i discover that the openings are different.what i would like to know is what was the cinema version and reasons for the additional segment. Is the DVD the directors cut.I'll break it down
Video :after opening Wikkipop wave it goes into Nat going left a few times and then chicken /red setter sequence
DVD :after opening Wikkipop wave goes into Blonde surfer going left
Surfer with shorty going left
Blonde surfer going left
Fitzgerald
Sleeveless wet suit going right
MP
MP
Short blonde hair going left
MP
MP
Blonde surfer
Then cuts to chicken /red setter sequence. All of this done to instrumental
Also could the identity of these surfers be revealed .Been dying to get back to computor to get this solved

Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
aparently quite a few different versions, received this snipet from a mate during a discussion on early 70's surf movies;
"briefly,,re MOTE vhs in UK,,this one apparently has a time code running across film, that interests me..also there is an early release one in oz(80s?),I'm after as i believe these were unedited/uncensored as the case the maybe..particulary the german hippy sequence in Bali, the original cinema release footage has the trippyhippy fellow throwing his yoyo (i mean yoyo) in his fully revealed birthday suit!..this has been removed from DVD and all later releases of VHS,with only less offensive snippet of hippy left."
will forward link to this discussion to said mate and perhaps he can answer your questions.
Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
Hi Mr Cutback
I was reading your comments on the movie and happened to be at a friends place this evening who had a copy of Morning of the Earth, had him put it on so i could watch it and try to identify the surfers in the first sequence. This is what i came up with.
1st Wave I am not positive my best guess Russell Hughes, really dont know.
2nd Ted Spencer [famous quote "When I surf I dance for Krisna".Dont hear much of that anymore.]
3rd Wave also not positive but think it is Andrew MacKinnon[not off to a flying start]
4rd Wave looks like Peter Drouyn to me[i get better after this]
5th Fitz as you said
6th MP
7th MP
8th Paul Neilsen
9th Mp
10 MP
11th Mark Warren
12th Ian Cairns
That is who I think they are, I used to watch this movie so much some years back relaxing after work, great to know it is being watched on the other side of the world.
My favourite section is Steven Cooney on the small day at Uluwatu.
Keep on trucking
Re: [josh] morning of the earth anomaly
Thanks josh but is that the dvd version or the vhs version as described ?Nat in redsetter/chicken sequence is that whale beach ?.Again any idea who those surfers are. There is a surfer before cabbage eating doing some lovely flowing surfing on a stubby fish ting .who he?Apart from general curiosity i think that its fair these guys should be remembered along side the still recognised faces.A moment in there youth at the height of there powers captured forever.

Re: [bluey] morning of the earth anomaly
Thanks bluey much appreciated. The copy of the vhs i have has no time code at bottom and hippy sequence only has his bare ass and a rather fallic object dangling near. Bye the way, how do you know they are German?

Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
Mr Cutback
That is Cooney eating raw cabbage supposed to be good for you but tastes crap. I think the surfer you are refering to is Mark Warren riding a Mccoy Twin fin by the look of it. If that is the guy on the orange board you are looking at.
Open up your heart great song.
Also dig the loose Lopez section.
Re: [tombstone] morning of the earth anomaly
thanks tombstone .Thats opened it up a bit.Just looked at my dvD and i have Fitzgerald as number 4 and unknown [Peter Drouyn?] as number 5.I get so much inspiration from this movie,it still is the best. I love the red Cooney board with the nose lift .Could you call it a slipper nose?

The surfer i am refering is in treehouse sequence surfing, opens up and closes sequence to the strains of Look around at the Day .Don't think its orange.Raw cabbage salads i remember as very 70's.

Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
The blond guy surfing with Nat is Steve Mulholand, Im good friends with his son in law and daughter - they live in ballina now, right near shelly's beach and steve runs an airconditioning company... still surfs a lot too... Sarah (daughter) now a "Blake" and hubby Brendan Blake are expecting 1st child in march and live 2 houses away from mum and dad. Also surf a lot and snowboard a lot. Brendan owns a building co.
Great people. Lucky to know them.
Riff.
Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
Brother Cutback
I dont have the movie on hand so I dont recall how all the sections link up, the tree house sequence is the surfing of Chris Brock. That is him and Cooney hanging around the tree house playing flute. Yeah he surfs with a beautiful style on that small board at lennox head. He left the city early and stayed up there which is hard to do still makes boards under his own name and surfs great.
Mark Warren I was refering to is surfing later on at Angourie with Cooney and Trealor, Steve is riding a clear board and doing some of the best surfing of the movie, pretty impressive considering he was only about 15 at the time.
I dont know if you have all the waves in the opening section that I have, but Fitz is unmistakable driving a fast backside line in a long john wetsuit. The guy i refered to as Drouyn is the one catching the sole righthander in the black iong john [ gotta love those wetsuits].
You maybe interested to know there was a magazine put out about the movie about 5 yrs ago i think Andrew Kidman was involved, you maybe able to hunt one up.
Stay Jazzed
Re: [tombstone] morning of the earth anomaly
Confirmed, Tree house sequence is Chris Brock.
i've only ever watched the dvd version.
i'll take a pen and paper down stairs and watch the wedge section again to get the names of those guys in order.

Re: [josh] morning of the earth anomaly
Drouyn is featured in alot of movies in the early seventies, even had his own self titled movie with cool sound track, take a look at Sea of Joy in the world contest sequence at Johanna riding a yellow board. There is also plenty of footage of Ted Spencer surfing all over with Wayne Lynch, You see Ted on another couple of waves in the movie riding a blue board on a small right, it is cut with him explaining to another guy using great hand motions the turning of a board. Nat does not feature in that first section, he kicks in feeding the chickens on his farm at Byron with Cooney.
Re: [tombstone] morning of the earth anomaly
hi tombstoneI
have just spoken to someone who was around at that timebut lives over here and they reckon you are correct, 3 is Andrew Mackinnon {he is a goofy] and 2 is Ted Spencer. He offers a name up for our mystery guy -his knickname was Dubba {spelling may be out}and i think his name was Fontane or something near .My source was clear,i just i got excited and forgot to write it down clearly. Does this fire up any memories?

Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
Yeah I hear what you are saying and respect the source of your informassi but personally i havent heard of a surfer from that time period by that name. All those featured in that that section were the heavy weights of Australian surfing of the time. So the must have all been around together for a contest being held in the area at the time. I always thought they were surfing at Johanna Victoria for a bells easter contest. They got alot of rubber on if it was in sydney it must be shot in winter and to have all those surfers together from all over australia was there a National titles being held in sydney? My call on Drouyn is first the style and then when paused the facial features and the lamb chops side burns{ that would give elvis a run for his money]. Fontaine would have to be a smokin hot local cat to to get a shot in a movie surfing with such high end company.
Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
hi cutback been thinking about your finds remarks with the nickname Dubba, did he say Dappa that was the nickname of a hot Narrabeen surfer called Grant Oliver, unfortunately passed away. Not a bad call for a hot natural footer of the time, even with a similar style[ In Bondi it was called horan arms, which MP had prior to Cheyne]. The reasons I will it aint Dappa is first he was short with shock blond hair, and secondly he rode Mccoy surfboards which always had big prominant logos. I could be wrong but for now I will stick with drouyn.
As Mike Purpus Said " All the soul in the world wont buy you breakfast".
Dig on
Re: [tombstone] morning of the earth anomaly
Hi Tombstone
you get the cigar .The name i was given was Grant Oliver{from what deep warped recess of my mind did Fontaine come from }and his Knickname was Dappa . My mistake. From how i descibed his surfing with the beating of the leading hand alla MP he came up with Dappa. This seems as you remember his style .Sad to hear he is no longer with us,but pleasant that he has left those who saw him surf with good memories. But i forgot hair colour sooo Drouyn it may be but we need confirmation I think.

Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
I just got the DVD as well. I must be too young but I can't take the music for very long however the surfing really makes up for it. Does anyone know who the guy sanding the tail of a board is (sorry for the lack of description)? I like this video a lot but it loses some credibility to me because the quote in the beginning has a grammatical error in it (the word should be "Nature's", not "Natures") but I guess that's just my anal-ness affecting me. Still, the surfing gets me so stoked just to rail to rail down the line on a nice single fin.
Re: [Monkstar1] morning of the earth anomaly
hi Monkstar1
David ''baddy'' Treloar ,who i believe still lives up there. Does anyone know. Can't disagree with you more about the music ,to my mind it is the best surfmovie film score and compliments the style of surfing and reflects the atmosphere of change surrounding the early seventies .And i aint no hippy,I'm a jazz man but it hits the spot.

Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
I do think some of the songs fit the surfing great but others stick out like a sore thumb and makes it tough for me to enjoy. But, major cool points for using music other than mainstream stuff. There is a very DIY hippy feel to the whole video that is lacking in a lot of the modern surf videos, and it's a nice change. I'm going to have to get some more (older) videos like this. I know there already was a thread on this but any suggestions for more videos with this feel/era in mind??? Sunshine Sea perhaps?? I haven't seen that yet but want to.
Re: [tombstone] morning of the earth anomaly
3 things!
I still believe it was Nat and not Ted Spencer or others.
I found out who the mystery guy was and confirmation that it was whale beach wedge.

Re: [josh] morning of the earth anomaly
Cool investigation work Josh there is some good slouthing going on, now we are starting to hot up. So i was always a little nervous about my call on the first surfer who I guessed at Russel Hughes. I will take that back and say the first wave ridden is The Fly Bradley, the looks the style suit I would be happy with that.
Also verified that it is the Whale Beach, that suits they were making tracks there at the time and the fly was a penninsula boy. One question what brought all those surfers from all over the country to be surfing at Whale beach that day?
But i will still stick with the call that the guy in the long arm spring suit is Ted Spencer who lived at Whale Beach, here is my theory Josh its a long shot but i will give it to you. Nat at the time was living up the coast in the middle of his country soul period as they like to call it. I reckon all these surfers had congregated for a contest of some sort, this was pre Surfabout, and Nat during this period wasnt competing, didnt jump back in until the bucks came into it. I know you got Albie on your side and who am i to argue with the big man.
I still personally believe the guy on right to be drouyn that is the only possible one that could be Nat in my opinion but he surfs different and is too squat in his style.
I am open to hear any arguement, or look at any new information.
rock steady
Re: [josh] morning of the earth anomaly
hi josh
Great that you have found a name for our mystery surfer but its opened another pondery .You have now put in doubt tombstones no1, Russel Hughes ,and now he wants ''the fly'' to replace him. You have seen him in On any Morning which suggests he was dark haired and therefore can't be no1. Hmmmm. To follow on from that in all probability it is our mystery surfer no5,BUT it could also be no2 who you think is Nat ,and to add my pennys worth I think isnt.Just can't see Nats style and when he kicks out we get a profile of him with a goaty . This resembles the surfer which Tombstone picked out in section 16 illustrating his wave which i am told is Ted Spencer. Yes It would be good to know what they were all doing there.Did Alby summond them?Oh and Josh where did you find your copy ofOn Any Morning.?

Re: [mpcutback] morning of the earth anomaly
Mr Cutback
Just to clarify things The Fly had blond hair his style suits and lived in the area at the time, a surfer of quality local talent and early indo pioneer. (married and lives in Bali, smart guy) Another movie he can be viewed in is A Winters Tale which has a large section of surfing in Sydney shot around 1973. The Fly is surfing Little Avalon, which is the next beach south of Whale.
Just to get this straight the guy you refer to as the mystery is going right is that correct? Who Josh believes to be Nat just so we are all digging the same hole.
Get stoked

Re: [tombstone] morning of the earth anomaly
hi
As it stands there is doubt on surfer 2-Josh is plugging for Nat. Tombstone for Ted Spencer
surfer 5{which i call the mystery surfer, and the only one going right]-Josh suggests ''The Fly'' Bradely. Tombstone thinks Peter Drouyn... BUT thinks The FLy is a good call being in that section and would put him as surfer number 1..Maybe someone who was there for the gathering could enlighten us .All theories welcome

Re: [tombstone] morning of the earth anomaly
well I tried but i think our mystery man is still in the shadows.I contacted Andrew Crockett publisher of Switch Foot {excellent read]thinking he might have some info .They are into surf history and had done a fairly extensive piece on Drouyn. However he was very honest and wrote he had not seen MOTE recently and never the DVD,thus that footage .He added he thought it unlikely it was Drouyn, but that was an opinion backed with no certainty.
I am surprised we can't nail this .Come on you Aussies stop moping we beat you in the one dayers and find out who these winged Jupiters were.

Re: [Monkstar1] morning of the earth anomaly
Monk,
"The Sunshine Sea" is a MacGillvray/Freeman production which contains a lot of footage just prior to when MOTE was filmed. One of the sequences feature Mark Martinson, Billy Hamilton and Keith Paull in France riding some of the first shortboard shapes. You can see in the movie that Martinson and Hamilton were greatly influenced by the wide tailed Plastic Machine V bottom design popularized by Bob McTavish. It was produced to entertain a more mainstream audience as compared to MOTE, it was shown here in Hawaii at regular cinema theatres as compared to a high school auditorium, where I first saw MOTE. The highlight of the film for me was the final sequence which featured Nat Young, David Nuuhiwa and Mark Martinson surfing a fun left in Maui which really showed how advanced David was at that time. Of the films produced during the MOTE era, a few others come to mind which you may like too...these are, "Sea of Joy", a definite must have and "A Winter's Tale" another Aussie produced film with classic footage.
You might want to consider getting "The Hot Generation", "Evolution" and "The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun" which kind of shows how things unfolded from the end of the longboard era up to the MOTE period.
Re: [foamdust] morning of the earth anomaly
Thanks for your selections Foamdust. I cannot locate Winters Tale and wonder if there are any in circulation.Sea Of Joy is only on US vhs which is not compatable with UK system. The others i have .I love Evolution and the sound track is great

Hello, Danny!
Evolution... One of the first surf-film that I went to see in the old "PAX" theater in Biarritz... Any of you out there experienced that? Those evenings at the PAX after a day of good surf, the whole Basque surfing population of the 70s meeting there... There were even some cool american boards under the screen and if you were lucky you could win one... Nostalgia of long ago gone days... Time it was, and what a time it was...

Re: [Monkstar1] morning of the earth anomaly
In regards to the music, i didn't really know what to think the first time i watched it. but now the movie wouldnt be the same without it, and the words especially go along with the film. I kinda associate each scene with the song.
Plus the treehouse sequence and the surfing after it is classic. Nice to fall asleep to after a long day of good surf.
