Re: [DaleSolomonson] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish a

Thanks Dale- the part of me that likes shiny and new ideas is very into the concept of carbon fibre. Daniel Thompson was riding a CF fish his dad shaped that was awesome, and had carbon fibre cutaway keel/fins- apparently the flex and snap back on the fins was really noticeable. Both those boards are great, and obviously Dick van Straalen and Rasta are really doing some cool stuff fooling around with the fish concept.

That was good Dale. We get a good close look at the boards, too. I wonder if the Taoist symble on the keel fish is Van Straalen's or a nod to Steve Lis? Mike

Re: [DaleSolomonson] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish a

Nice clip and info, thanks for posting that.

From the way he handles both boards and swings them around, they are Very light weight. Also the sound when his hand hits them indicates a very light core. If not hollow they are .75 eps core.

Also there is no indication of a center stringer on either board. I'd say both boards he shows have perimeter stringers.

This I like. I was interested to hear that he prefered the quad with concave to the twin with vee.
Shame we can't get this sort of input more often, but most premeire league shapers seem to like to keep their innovations to themselves so others can't copy it, fair anough I suppose.

Re: [DaleSolomonson] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish a

Thanks for the link Dale...looks like a very fresh and interesting approach...
clever fusion of old and modern concepts. The first board looks like it hauls ass.

Any one know the name of surf film he refers to?

Paul, just a guess...it looks like its built for DTL speed so I dont think there's a lot of macro board flex going on there (I wouldnt want much either), but there might be some swallow tail and fin flex. Cost of CF is a major deterrant for me - I dont think the benefits outweigh the costs...durability can be achieved in different ways as you know. Interestingly, bamboo is pound for pound stronger than steel...and renewable! In contrast, it takes quite a bit of energy to make CF and huge demand from aircraft makers is raising prices even further. Crazy.

yeah i wanted to say it
but i dig what there doing wrt designs

DudleyPerkins (not verified)

Re: [rooster] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish and quad

rooster- the symbol is DVS' own.

the movie in reference is Under the Sun
by cyrus sutton (Riding Waves)
supposed to be released this summer

i've felt up the dvs carbon twin keel that he's talking about before, but i can't remember the stringer setup, might be stringerless. either way, you can't tell thru the carbon. that board is rediculously light, lighter than my 4'10 eps/epoxy, and it was a foot longer at least. run can further elaborate, he's got the same one.

Re: [tooltripper] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish and

I'd never noticed this thread before but I do have a DVS carbon fibre flex keel and the width is 52 cm's. Some have speculated about their speed and they are fiendishly fast.
The fun begins at 3' and in 5' sucky, smooth beachbreaks with light winds they are in their element and the keel fins hold and keep on holding..
No fun whens its too windy or choppy and foamy walls can make things sketchy as mine has a huge concave.

Thanks for adding to the discussion.
Yours I take it is the twin fin fish?
Can you give us dimensions 12" from nose and 12 from tail?
How far up from the tips are the fins?
Pictures would be great too!
Thanks

Those boards are just wrapped in carbon fiber, they aren't hollow or anything right?
Is it EPS and epoxy?

Yeah lets see some pics of that beauty

Re: [tooltripper] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish and

Took some measurements in inches this time.
Nose width is 13 & 3/4"s.
12"s from butt crack is 17 & 1/2"
12"s from swallow tips is 16"s
From swallow tip to leading edge of fin is 14"s
From swallow tip to trailing edge of fin is 6"s
The cutaway in the fin is 4" from the base of the fin to the trailing edge.
I also a 1 & 1/2" tall glassed in centre fin.
Happy to supply pics but I need to be able to e mail someone the pics and have them post them for me.
The thing I noticed about the Rasta clip is it doesn't show the deep V shaped concave that I have in through between the fins I have on my board.
Also a good shot of the V on the outside edge of the fins and rails around the swallow tail may give some good ideas to those wishing to extract more from their fish planshape.

Re: [lennox76] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish and qua

Thanks for posting them. Should be an outline shape and a few others in amongst the shots I pm'ed for and even better look. There's other shots which show the depth of the centre (V) concave well which would be good to post too.
Yes, its a rocket fish and has the concave deck, so just like Rasta is showing in the first part of the video related to this thread. The deck concave is great. Not a thought of needing a tail pad. Not that I bother with them of late anyway.
The little centre trailer was an early rocket fish feature but not used lately but I like it.

Re: [DaleSolomonson] Dave Rastovich interview with carbon fish a

I like that traction strip that Rasta has on the second board. I don't personally use them on my fish, but it's definitely an iteresting concept to use just the vertical piece of the trackion pad for a fish. Often I find myself looking for leverage through a turn on my fish - I wonder how that's working out for him.

Here Goes Nothing.

Well after a bit of research and hemming and hawing, I dug out a marko EPS blank and started making my first attempt at an EPS board.

Finished the outline, bottom contours, and started on the deck concave. Called it a day there. Man I'll say one thing, that EPS gets away from me pretty fast. I can't imagine shaping with foam less dense than the 1.7 pcf. The nice thing was, after a few mess ups on the bottom with some tear outs along the tail, I had used up any extra thickness in an otherwise overly thick blank. Phew, glad there was that extra foam...

Pretty much followed the dimensions I was given by Cuttlefish from his DVS Rocket Fish. Thanks for the pics and all the measurements! It's 2 3/8" thick at the deepest part of the deck concave. Ended up using Aku Shaper to create and outline/template.

This will be my first attempt at glassing a board as well. So this board will get all kinds of firsts out of the way. First EPS, first epoxy, first carbon board. First time posting my work on here too for that matter.

A couple buddies of mine build canoes, so they're nice enough to sell me some carbon for cost. Any advice on how many layers I'd have to go using 4.5 ounce carbon? Will this even work? Thanks in advance.

Here goes nothing...

Was wondering how far of the rails those fins are placed and the amount of toe being used ????
What's the lenght of the board you've taken these spec's from ???
Also the widest point of the board, is it half way, forward of half way ????
Appologies if you've already posted this somewhere ..... I can't find them !!!
Anyway, look forward to hearing from yaaaaaa

It's a shame we don't have footage of his rocket fish in action for comparison.

Will be going to the fish fry in Qld ... you never know might get to see some DVS specials there ( will certainly grab some shots)

Re: [foamhead] gettin' a bit fishy.

Hey Foamhead,

things are coming along sloooowly. My mom was in town for a week and a half and I was busy with work too, but finally I'm back at it.

Cleaned things up some today. Tried to fix some wobbly lines I had on the outline before continuing, then got fed up and just charged ahead. This is certainly the thinnest and lightest board I've ever shaped. Hope it's rideable! Turned the rails, cut out the butt crack, cleaned up the concave on the deck some too. Guess next up is some spackling.

BTW, guys in Hawaii, where have you been getting your epoxy? Do you order from resin research or buy locally?

G'day Walter,
I'll get those photos happening this evening and start a fish fry 08 thread.
Very nice to meet you and sorry not to say goodbye as Ahmee (oldest daughter) was fired up by all the fish to take her pink Softlite fish for a paddle.

so after over a year of sitting under the house. the rocket fish is finally glassed. it's been so long i forgot the dimensions. all i know is it's 6ft long...
after being mildly pleased with the shape, i absolutely butchered my first glass job. but i'm stoked on how carbon looks with green tint. black in low light, forest green in the sun.
