Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
"There has been considerable comment lately about the evolving epoxy market. Some of the discussions have centered around the state of surfboard technology, where the market is going and from time to time, fairly specific commentary about Firewire surfboards. In some cases these comments have come from people associated with our Brand. "
Gentlemen, I announce that I have resigned from Firewire surfboards...
With Swaylockers such a source of support to me over the years, I wanted to thank you all and tell you that I have taken a new direction in my career.
Having shaped, glassed, sprayed, sanded for more than twenty years and spent the last 2 on vacuum bagged epoxy composite boards, I am well placed to make some really special boards. Time to step up.
I made all of Taj Burrows personal boards right up to his recent winning at my home beach, Bells, and I now have a comprehensive understanding of composite surfboard construction technology. I'd had a hand in the construction of boards, poly and composite, for top 16 pros before, but to have Taj win on one I made was pretty special:-No more bridesmaid for Composite construction.
The winning Bells and Airshow boards, and Taj's Tahiti guns, are the last Firewires to pass through my hands. Who now builds them? Who knows.
The journey began here at Swaylocks with Bert Burger and I hitting it off from day one, but also in particular I thank Silly, DanB, Pinhead and Chipfish for inspiration...
The boards in the attached pics are my personal quiver:-they are the prototypes for many of aspects of Firewires construction tech, but you won't see these in their model range!
I look forward to getting my designs out there.
Now, what was that grassroots operation, begins with "S", that started it all???

Re: [Hicksy] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Yeah Hicksy...
Thanks heaps man. Add you to that list of Sways legends!
The pinkish/orange board has a double concave deck, like a big raised archbar. Two other boards in the shot have it too, but the matt finish and spray obscure it. The double concave deck is something I've worked on for a while. Its got a couple of functions. Feels good under the feet, locked in with the archs. Also an extension of Berts' concave decks. Here the aim is have the bottom contour go DOUBLE concave as the board flexs. Its very interesting.
Dimensions on that one are 6'7 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2. Weight 2.3 kg. It's my first machine shape. More pix show how thin the tail tapers, with the back plug visible both sides. That tail twangs in your fingertips.

Hi Josh, I just checked out your website- www.speedneedle.com.au.
Great shapes and unbelievable art works! I'd almost be reluctant to use the boards considering the originality of the artwork. For some reason I really like the weather map one, with the cyclonic depression and the front moving in. Abstract in a way that maybe only surfers can appreciate. Kudos. And best of luck with your endeavours. I'm sure you'll shine.
Re: [Wells] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Hey Wells,
How's the coffin going?
I like to keep some of my stuff a little secret:- The double concave deck might get out there now.
The pics are detail shots. The twinfin is wild! Mellowed out the arch for the pink board.

Hicksy,
That photo is right after the deed was done hey? It still has those welts. Hmm, I've got a Tatt/Surf story. You know the tattooist will say no salt water for a week. Well, 4 days into a new tatt with a big swell up, I just had to go out! My cred was suffering as I watched "Shitattacks" breaking from the carpark, so I had to go out, tatt bandage on. Big and lonely and Victorian.

Hey Speedy, I great to hear from you! I was wondering how the firewire life was treating you, and now I know. The firm has certainly been living up to my low expectations. Its amazing to see all that you've learned in the past couple years - your boards look amazing! I can't wait to see what you come up with in the future.

great, thanks for asking! unfortunately right as I pimped out my kit completely, I got a bunch of work, and have had no time at all...I did manage to "squeeze" out a board a couple weeks ago, however, and finished and rode it monday for the first time...Pretty psyched, I'll post it up as soon as I get the time (dont know when that'll be).
I also have a big'ol box of balsa and several assorted cans of sticky goo, and some free time coming up, so I'll let you know. let's just say it's already starting to smell like the undead around here...
wow, look at the sharp peaks of the deck contour on that fish...wouldn't that concentrate maximum load along a pretty narrow strip of deck as the board flexed? they look almost like upside down rail channels...
Drooooooooooooooooooool!
nice work, speedy! I'm sorry to say, but my backroom is going to shamelessly copy and exploit all of your innovative new directions! ;~)) thanks for expanding the conceivable!

Hi there Josh,
This is great to hear... I've always loved your artwork and felt that we wern't seeing nearly enough of it while you were at Firewire.
Hopefully this also means that you will make your full-time comback to Sways in the same way Bert has come back... it was a poorer place without you.

Re: [speedneedle] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Josh,
The peach machine shaped board looks amazing! Spacey and Hi-tech but with your eye for curves, beautiful. If it goes as good as it looks and doesn't squash your nads when paddling, I'd be interested in getting one the same ( 6'1"x 18 1/2" x 2 1/4?) Have you had any waves on it yet?
Re: [speedneedle] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Best of luck Josh, both your art and concepts look amazing. I'm so stoked by all this stuff. I have my nylon vac bags, my RR epoxy and balsa are with the shippers and I glued up a couple of sheets of EPS last night. can't wait to get started.
With yourself and Bert working from the same technology, in the same market It'll be good to see what happens, particularly as you bring your own design concepts to the process.
Best of luck to both of you.

Nice Quiver!! The double concave deck looks and sounds interesting.
what fins do you have on your tri's? looks like m5's or m7's.
I think I like big stiff fins for this type of construction.

Nope, even their return isn't enough to get me posting right now ;) I tend to be rather obsessive, and only have time to obsess about one thing at a time. I just got a new diesel van (with a lot of help from Ben), and its been a huge learning curve. Since it has a few (as in lots of) miles on it I've been spending most of my free time learning how it works. For instance this weekend I get to rebuild the front end (springs, shock, bushings). However, overall the van is in great shape so it shouldn't take that much more of my time to renue its youth - then I'll be back. The plus is that its big enough to permenately store my boards in it which has been getting me out in the water a couple more times a week (I love having vented boards).
Re: [speedneedle] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Speedneedle,
congrats on your board winning at Bells. definitely not a bridesmaid anmore as you said.

Hi Josh,
what kind of waves did you design that pink board for? seems to me it would go well on a small but nicely shaped wave. Not for grovelling but not when its pumping either. I could be wrong though. Your thoughts?
Cheers,

Re: Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
This is awesome!
A tour of Australia to pick up CompSands on both coasts and then over to NZ to grab some of Silly's work would be sweet trip from SD. And if I made that 14 hour flight I might as well hit Indo to work out the sweet spots on the new quiver. What a trip that would be!
I am stoked to see this movement take root and grow. I still like my firewire and look foward to a day when I can get my hands on one of your new rocket ships!
Best of luck and please train others to make these boards.
Shine on...
Re: [Daklaw] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Hmm,
Yeah, the pink board is basically for small shapely waves, Queensland pockets.
I had been deadset into swallowtails down in Victoria. The little straight section of tail is good for drive in some of my beloved Southern waves. You tend to get a big round cutback. Queensland however has a tighter, steeper pocket to the waves, and you want to hook tighter. The curve in the outline in a rounded pin allows this. The board on the right end of the quiver lineup has the formula down better than the peach board, which has a little too much bulk in the rail.
The rail profile needs to be a little finer in these double concave decks, theres more bulk transfered to that high point where the concave meets the rail. Yeah, a finer rail profile than my standard domed decks.
In fact there's only one domed deck in that quiver...
Quiver shot from left to right
1)- "Penetrator" 6'7" x 19 1/4" x 2 1/2. Double concave deck round pin. Prefab skin
2)- "Offcutter" 7'x18 3/4" x 2 3/8" Dome deck, flat bottom, round pin. Combo balsa/corecell deck.
3)- "Space Machine" 6'5 x 20 1/2" x 2 3/8 Double concave deck Twin fin 2.1 kg.
4)- "White Knight" 6'6" x 19" x 2 3/8" Concave deck, 2kg. 2 oz bottom, single 4deck, texture deck.
5)- "Two-tone" 6'6" x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 Concave deck, two density Dcell deck, balsa springer.
6)- "El Mysterioso" 6'6" x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 Double Concave deck. Ridiculously light.

Re: [Wells] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Hey Wells,
Glad to contribute to the expansion of the conceivable.
I've spent a long time looking for new lines in a surfboard...
Yeah, a lifetime of looking down a middle stringer, then BANG its not there anymore. With the centre stringer gone, the mindset changes. Bert freaked when he saw that twinfin shaped. Even further than he had taken decks. That was cool.
I'm into where to place the stiffness and flex next. That debate about Taj's board with weight? Totally bogus.
Silly was actually on the money with it...Not about weight but STIFFNESS DISTRIBUTION...varying skin, wood thickness and core densities.
Speedy
Re: [yoshio] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Yoshio,
I've got the full range of those FCS composite fins...M3, M7, M5. I used to stick with a YU template fin on my small wave boards, but eventually I realised I was designing boards around the fins!
So now I mix and match. Mainly smaller back fins. The FCS fin system is reliable, and the fins are easy to get hold of. I have handmade corecell/epoxy fins in the twinfin, a good thick foil. If I had more time, I'd make all my own fins.
Been playing with fin tilt too...keep going back to 4deg for the drive...

regarding these specs..
Quote:
1)- "Penetrator" 6'7" x 19 1/4" x 2 1/2. Double concave deck round pin. Prefab skin
2)- "Offcutter" 7'x18 3/4" x 2 3/8" Dome deck, flat bottom, round pin. Combo balsa/corecell deck.
3)- "Space Machine" 6'5 x 20 1/2" x 2 3/8 Double concave deck Twin fin 2.1 kg.
4)- "White Knight" 6'6" x 19" x 2 3/8" Concave deck, 2kg. 2 oz bottom, single 4deck, texture deck.
5)- "Two-tone" 6'6" x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 Concave deck, two density Dcell deck, balsa springer.
6)- "El Mysterioso" 6'6" x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 Double Concave deck. Ridiculously light.
What's your specs?
so I can put things into perspective because they seem wider than what I would envision for those lengths.
We hardly see anything out here 19"-20" wide in that length most everything is 18"-19" wide. I think Bud's board reflect best what we see in mostly our market here in Hawaii.
If you were to compare where you're at compsand wise, compared to where you where before you hooked up with Bert and the FW project, how far off would you say you were prior to the experience? Cause remembering your posts you were doing some neat things even back then in balsa compsands..
How would those boards you made back then compare to what you're doing today?

Re: [oneula] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Oneula,
Specs as in Inner/Outer layup?
All bottoms 2oz inner and outer.
All decks 2oz inner 4oz outer.
This is not a stock layup...way light.
I'd certainly make boards for Hawaii a little narrower to accommodate the juice. You see in those specs the 7' gun is narrowest. I'm 6'3" and 85 KG. Proportionately my boards would be smaller for me than the average height dude on his 6'1.
I keep wanting my original pre-FW composite board back to refer to. It also has the same specs as above, but 16mm railwood. One of the FW Directors borrowed it. Maybe I kiss it goodbye, but shucks I wish...
I have the rocker hotwire files for it. So I can see where I've gone to from it.
The thing with FW was the sheer number of boards I did:- It was great for getting a bog-standard approach down and handing it over to production...but all my personal boards are Left-field. There's a little something in each of them thats a bit too rad. Improvisation... I made skins out of Offcuts, for example. Yeah, its a hard one, would these ideas have occurred to me had I never gone with FW?
Well, a job does'nt make you smart.
Speedy
Re: [speedneedle] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight

Thanks Josh
that's what I was looking for
as I'm about 200lb but only 5'7" and old
the majority of my PU performance thruster shorties have been in the 6'8"-7'2" and 20"-21" and 2.75"-3.18" thick so I'm trying to understand how thin I need to go to get my compsand to flex right without having floatation issues.
Sitting up to your chichi's in shark infested waters by yourself is not what I consider fun.
We've been averaging 1/2"-1.5" railbands of pure balsa, balsa/cork, cedar/cork, corecel and blue dow as well. Sounds like FW decided to go narrower because when we were comparing the first generation boards to the current boards we noticed that the old fish I had was both thicker and had thicker rail bands so it seems the boards have changed in the past year.
beautiful work
best wishes
thanks again

Re: [oneula] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Oneula,
The Double concave deck is a good stable feeling paddling.
The chest area is single concave, so the chest is cupped, and the double concave bit for your thighs.
When standing, your feet are over the bar, its a solid, connected feel. But I have high arches in my feet. Bert, on the other hand has very flat feet. For such, a single concave would offer more foot surface area.

Re: [speedneedle] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Funny you mention 4 degree for drive. I was playing around with my fins lately to get MORE DRIVE.
and I was only thinking about toe in as well.....
gotta try out 4 degrees. I've stucked to 6 degrees for some reason, maybe it was that john carper video.
thanks,
Jimmy yoshio shibata.
Re: [yoshio] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Yo Yoshio, yeah 4 degree works for most fin systems because of fin flex.
with stiffer fins, you can go more cant.
Look forward to eyeballin your future work product there speedy. Cheers.

Re: [speedneedle] Speedneedle Sets the Record Straight
Come on now speedy..........let's be honest here.......
Solo signs off by saying "When dealing in lies...the truth becomes the enemy. "
Now I fully understand what he is talking about.
"I made all of Taj Burrows personal boards..........but to have Taj win on one I made........."
Honestly now.........wasn't your input in these boards just glassing them? Not exactly "making" them. Might look good on a resume though I suppose.
"The boards in the attached pics are my personal quiver:-they are the prototypes for many of aspects of Firewires construction tech, but you won't see these in their model range!"
Wouldn't that make them the property of Firewire?
Beware all you swaylockians.........it would appear that truth and honesty is further away than first thought.
