After the kerfuffle on wood v wood bits maybe a thread with wood boards of all descriptions hollow, compsand , chambered or veneered all welcome.
I'll start with a balsa compsand 7'2" my first one.
Let's see yours, I know we've seen some awesome boards before don't mind seeing them again all in one place

No build shots but I can tell you it is a very close copy of a Cooperfish Comet. 1/8" balsa and spanish cedar over 1lb EPS foam.

Kit...

I AM a Goth, comes from working too many midnights in little blue rooms.

These other shots are'nt a whole lot more flattering...at least you can see the board.

I've been to a supplier back in Aus lately to check out the veneers available. I'm excited...there is natures art in each leaf of whole logs.

they have a lot of bending ply's which are probably more suited to my boards but the veneer selection is amazing and quite cheap.
i paid $15 for a sheet, 2500 by 500 mm..african jarah... beautiful!!

Re: [shifty] Show your wood....

What thicknesses of ply?

I've had no joy getting veneer thicker than .6mm and thats not a sandwich skin...it needs to be put on top of Balsa. That gets arduous.

Danny Hesse's skins are poplar bending ply apparrently...I love the look of those.

saw one of Danny's boards yesterday at wetsand, the skin was completely clear (super super light yellow, almost white) with one 5-6" stripe of rich browns going nose to tail...the thing was SO beautiful!!

Re: [surferguy80] Show your wood....

If you can handle the extra weight, it opens up a lot more options.
Hess has it right... make 'em beautiful and don't care about weight.
People are buying his boards now because they are heavy, he's made that type of look and ride his signature.
Killer looks and a smooth as silk glide

It's crazy eh, veneers are so much less work, but most people say they look better!
A veener supplier near me told me they used to stock Paulownia ply! So bummed they don't any more

I have built a couple of boards with just veneer over EPS. They end up being heavy and much less durable than the balsa skinned ones.

Re: [mooneemick] Show your wood....

It was a few years ago now but it was a lot. I think 4oz under and then 6oz on the bottom and 2 x 6oz on the decks. Water got inside the walnut one and it turned blotchy. I have got water in my 1/8" balsa skinned boards and had no problems.

Some great looking boards being posted , really impressive.
Makes me wonder about the woodworking experience you guys have had prior to applying it to building boards. I'm a carpenter and joiner by trade so the use of wood in surfboard construction feels natural to me and I'm really keen to build more of all construction methods.
Keep em coming
